5 Essential Tips to Maintain Your Wood Furniture

The Quiet Beauty of Well-Loved Wood

There’s something undeniably grounding about wood. The rich grain, the warm undertones, the subtle scent of timber, it all tells a story. Whether it's a bespoke dining table that anchors your evenings, or a custom cabinet built to cradle your memories, wooden furniture offers timeless character that only deepens with care.
At Woodhaven Craftworks, we believe great carpentry doesn’t end at the final coat of finish. It lives on in how your furniture ages gracefully in your home.
Here are five essential tips to maintain that wood furniture
1. Dust with Intention, Not Just Habit
It might sound simple, but dusting isn’t merely about appearances. Dust particles act like fine sandpaper, when left untouched, they can dull your wood’s finish over time. Use a soft microfibre cloth to gently follow the grain, embracing the natural lines of the timber. Avoid feather dusters, which can scatter particles into crevices.
Make this a weekly ritual. A mindful moment to appreciate the silhouette, touch, and tone of your piece, just as we do during our hand-finishing process.
2. Mind the Microclimate
Singapore’s tropical humidity can be both a friend and foe to wood. Solid timber breathes with its surroundings, expanding and contracting subtly. To prevent warping or cracks, keep your furniture away from direct heat sources like radiators or air-con vents. Similarly, avoid placing pieces in areas with extreme moisture, such as beside open windows during monsoon months.
If your home has dry air conditioning year-round, a small humidifier near key wooden pieces can keep the timber content and balanced.
3. Clean Gently, Treat Kindly
When cleaning spills or smudges, resist the urge to reach for all-purpose cleaners. Many contain harsh chemicals that can strip away protective finishes and leave wood vulnerable. Instead, use a damp (not wet) cloth followed by a dry one. For more persistent marks, a dedicated wood-safe cleanser is your best ally.
At Woodhaven, we often recommend testing any product on an inconspicuous area first, especially for oiled or matte finishes, which can react differently than lacquered surfaces.
4. Polish with Purpose
A well-chosen polish or wax can revive the natural lustre of wood, especially for pieces that see daily use. But moderation is key, over-polishing can lead to a sticky buildup that traps dust.
Choose a high-quality beeswax or plant-based furniture balm, and apply sparingly with a soft cloth. Work with the grain, allowing the timber to drink it in. This not only nourishes the wood but also enhances its resilience to everyday wear.
5. Position Thoughtfully
Wood has a memory. Place a vase in the same spot for too long, and it might leave a faint ring of its presence. Direct sunlight over time may draw out uneven fading or cause lighter woods to yellow.
Consider rotating decorative items seasonally, and if possible, avoid placing heavy objects in the same spot indefinitely. Use coasters, felt pads, or linen runners as subtle protectors that complement rather than cover the beauty beneath.
The Woodhaven Difference
At Woodhaven Craftworks, we treat every piece as a living object, designed not just to function, but to belong. Our furniture is handcrafted with slow intention: joints shaped by hand, grain direction chosen with care, finishes applied in quiet layers. We build for longevity, not trend.
But the journey doesn’t end when your custom piece leaves our studio. We remain partners in its life within your space, offering aftercare advice, touch-up services, and guidance that honours the material’s natural rhythm.
